Galilee Wine Region

An Introduction to Galilee Wine Region

The Galilee region in northern Israel encompasses both Upper and Lower Galilee. Though steeped in ancient history, its modern wine industry has risen rapidly since the 1990s and is now at the heart of Israel’s premium wine reputation.

Geography & Climate

Galilee’s vineyards range from 200 to over 1,200 meters in elevation, with Mount Meron among Israel’s highest peaks. Cool temperatures, significant rainfall, and diverse soils of basalt, limestone, and terra rossa contribute to balanced, expressive wines.

Wineries & Backstories

● Galil Mountain Winery founded in 1997 on Mount Kna’an, elevating Upper Galilee’s international reputation.

● Dalton Winery founded in 1995 by the Haruni family, with its Matatia label highlighting the region’s full potential.

● Recanati Winery founded in 2000 by Lenny Recanati, focused on estate-grown vineyards near Manara.

● Tabor Winery located near Kfar Tabor in Lower Galilee, producing Rhône-style blends while emphasizing regional identity.

Unique Characteristics

Galilee’s high elevation, cool climate, and complex soils make it ideal for both structured reds and vibrant aromatic whites, with natural acidity and aging potential.
