Golan Heights Wine Region

Introduction / Overview

The Golan Heights is Israel’s most distinct cool-climate region, located in the northeast on an elevated volcanic plateau. Though planted only since 1976, it became the center of Israel’s modern wine revolution in the 1980s.

Geography & Climate

The Golan’s vineyards sit at 400 to 1,200 meters elevation, with cold winters, snowfall, and long, cool growing seasons. Volcanic basalt soils offer excellent drainage and mineral complexity, while the altitude preserves freshness and acidity in both red and white wines.

Wineries & Backstories

● Golan Heights Winery founded in 1983 by eight kibbutzim and moshavim, led by Victor Schoenfeld as head winemaker since 1992. It sparked Israel’s modern winemaking revolution.

● Château Golan founded in 1999 by Uri Hetz, blending French château aesthetics with Israeli terroir.

● Pelter Winery founded in 2005 by Tal Pelter, following his oenology studies in Australia, known for its broad portfolio and sparkling wine experiments.

● Har Odem Winery founded near the Valley of Tears. The family-run winery gained international attention after being invited to prestigious global exhibitions.
