Samson (Coastal Plain & Judean Foothills) Wine Region

Introduction / Overview

The Samson region covers Israel’s central coastal plain southeast of Tel Aviv and extends into the Judean Foothills. Historically important, this region anchored much of Israel’s early modern wine industry.

Geography & Climate

The coastal plain sits near sea level, with hot, humid summers, while the foothills rise toward 350 meters, offering slightly cooler and drier conditions. Soils vary from sandy alluvial loams to chalky clay loams, with Mediterranean rainfall patterns.

Wineries & Backstories

● Barkan Wine Cellars modernized in 1990, tracing its roots to the Friedman family winery originally founded in 1899.

● Rishon LeZion Wine Cellars established in 1890 as part of Carmel’s early operations, now a heritage site and functional winery.

● Bravdo Winery founded by Eli and Iris Bravdo, both viticulture professors, focusing on small-lot wines in Karmei Yosef.

● Mony Vineyards family-owned winery in the Judean Foothills producing Mediterranean varietals including Malbec and Grenache.

Unique Characteristics

Samson’s diversity allows for full-bodied reds, approachable whites, and a mix of industrial and boutique production. The proximity to Israel’s population centers supports both commercial output and wine tourism.

Fun & Interesting Facts

1. This region was among the first in Israel to adopt drip irrigation, an Israeli innovation that has since become global standard practice.

2. The Judean Foothills’ chalky clay soils contribute to smoother tannins and balanced acidity.

3. Near the region, Rimon Winery produces pomegranate-based wines, showcasing Israel’s creative approach to fruit winemaking.

Personal Note

Samson may sit in the shadows of Israel’s trendier regions, but its balance of history, science, and quiet innovation continues to ground the country’s wine narrative.

Regional Wine Terms

● Chalky clay loam: A blend of clay, sand, and limestone providing water retention and drainage, supporting balanced ripening and smooth tannin development.
