Shomron Wine Region: Overview
Shomron stretches from Mount Carmel through the Sharon Plain into Ramat Menashe. This is where modern Israeli winemaking was reborn in the late 19th century, with Baron Edmond de Rothschild’s first vineyard plantings that laid the foundation for Israel’s wine industry.
Geography & Climate
Shomron’s Mediterranean landscape includes gentle hills, terra rossa and limestone soils, and a climate moderated by coastal breezes. The vineyards sit at low elevations, with warm dry summers, mild winters, and balanced growing conditions that support ripe yet structured wines.
Wineries & Backstories
● Carmel Winery founded in 1882 by Rothschild. It remains Israel’s largest and most historic winery, with cellars where David Ben-Gurion once worked.
● Tishbi Winery founded by Jonathan Tishbi in 1984, after his family transitioned from grape growers into winemakers, creating an independent family winery that carries his name.
● Binyamina Winery established in 1952 by Hungarian immigrant Joseph Zeltzer in a former perfume factory. The winery was named after the town, which itself honors Rothschild’s Hebrew name.
● Gat Shomron founded by Lior Nachum, a former high-tech engineer who pursued his passion for experimental winemaking, producing wild yeast, late-harvest, and Amarone-style wines.
Shomron Wine Region: Unique Characteristics
Shomron combines deep historical legacy with dynamic modern entrepreneurship. Its Mediterranean terroir produces approachable yet structured wines, while the region’s diversity supports both industrial scale and boutique creativity.
Fun & Interesting Facts
1. In 1892 Rothschild established the Mizgaga glass factory in Tantura to manufacture bottles for his wineries. Managed by Meir Dizengoff, later Tel Aviv’s first mayor, the factory was Israel’s first Jewish-owned industrial venture.
2. Binyamina’s prestige “Cave” label is aged underground in a former Ottoman-era cistern, providing a naturally cool, stable environment for maturation.
3. Gat Shomron’s founder, Lior Nachum, left Israel’s tech sector to build his boutique winery, applying precision, wild fermentation, and Amarone techniques to desert-influenced terroir.
Personal Note
Shomron’s appeal lies in its layers of personal ambition — immigrants, engineers, visionaries — each shaping this historic region with their own story. The wines carry that sense of narrative in every glass.
Regional Wine Terms
● Terra rossa: Iron-rich red clay over limestone that provides balanced water retention and structure to the wines.
● Wild yeast fermentation: Allowing fermentation by native yeasts present on grape skins or in the winery, which can add complexity and terroir-driven character.
